Online Mating - The New Online Dating?

Ah the beauty of databases... all those like-minded people neatly listed and collated, their inboxes eagerly waiting for a new taste of email adventure. This is what we have come to know and love about online dating sites: a ready-made, profiled line-up of little face pics and usernames. We get to choose who to tentatively approach with a not-too-pushy-not-too-disinterested email, with the obvious intent to check each other out for relationship potential. Each person knows that what the other person is looking for is a relationship.

But more recently, it appears that an astonishing number of people simply want to email/text each other as a brief prelude to intercourse. If the number of 'online mating' companies springing up everywhere is any indication of consumer demand, more and more people want short and sweet sexual encounters with people they don't know. And yes, that's girls too, not just pubescent males...

Hang on a minute, is this rapid propagation of mating sites a result of consumer demand, or of webmaster greed? The main commercial difference between an online dating site and an online mating site is this: whereas lonesome_sue is sending out her prospecting emails ultimately looking for one man, swinging_sam69 sends out several invitations to the party in her pants, and the more that come (!) the better. It's simple to see why running an online mating site is profitable: swinging_sam69 is a repeat customer, whereas if lonesome_sue gets what she wants, she'll be canceling her monthly sub and will never need an online dating site again (she hopes).

The answer probably lies in both consumer demand and online money-making entrepreneurs. Thanks to those databases, brief sexual encounters are more accessible than ever before, and so is making money online from people that want them. I'm pretty sure regular online dating sites still have legs, and surely by their very nature will be higher quality sites than mating sites? Either way, even thinking about this subject makes me feel old-fashioned - I always thought dating was the prelude to mating. And I've only just got used to the idea of online dating being a prelude to mating. But skipping the dating and no waiting for mating?! Oh boy. When I was growing up, this is what nightclubs were for - I guess now you don't even need to dance and/or drink beer to wind up in bed with a stranger.
